Place two packs of CBD seeds beside each other, one labelled 1:1 and the other 20:1, and the two look identical: the same brand foil, same seed count, seeds which nobody’s eye can separate apart. Grow them in the same tent and they part ways from the first step and do not converge again. The reason is a single gene, and the clearest way to understand what it does is to follow the two packs along every step they share: the breeding that made them, the seed, the seedling, the flowering tent, the harvest, the jar, the lab bench and the law. The ratios quoted as reference points throughout are taken from the range at https:\/\/calmcbdseeds.com<\/a>, and that range runs 1:1, 2:1 and 20:1 and a top line at about 30 to one; the genetics is the same whichever shop the packs came from.<\/p>\n

Before the Seed Exists<\/h2>\n

Cannabis decides if it is going to produce THC or CBD at one locus on the genome. The gene there comes in two forms: one builds the enzyme that converts the common starting molecule into THCA, the other the enzyme that turns it into CBDA. Each plant holds two copies, one inherited from either parent, and the combination fixes the chemotype. Two THC copies make a THC-dominant plant. Two CBD copies give a CBD-dominant one. One of each gives a balanced plant, since the two versions are codominant and not one of them silences the other.<\/p>\n

The 1:1 pack was bred by pairing two balanced plants, each carrying one copy of each version. The CBD-dominant pack was made by pairing two plants that both hold two CBD copies and no THC copy between them. This one fact at the cross decides all that follows afterwards, and the difference is already inside the seed long before it is packed.<\/p>\n

Stage Two: Inside the Seed<\/h2>\n

Cross two balanced plants and the seeds fall themselves by the simplest rule in genetics: a quarter get two THC copies, a quarter get two CBD copies, half inherit one of each. In a pack of 10 seeds that works out to, on average, two or three THC-dominant seeds, around two CBD-dominant ones, and five genuine balanced seeds. The pack is sold by its parents, and in the case of half its seeds the label fits; for the other half it is a description of something else. Calm CBD Seeds states the expected split on each balanced line, so the buyer knows before sowing that a share of the plants are going to differ from the stated ratio.<\/p>\n

The CBD-dominant pack has no such spread. Each seed received a CBD copy from each parent, every plant will be CBD-dominant, and the ratio on the foil holds to every one of them, within the small variation in how much total cannabinoid an given plant builds. Breeders say these lines “breed true” for chemotype; the phrase means exactly this absence of variation.<\/p>\n

Where Nothing Shows<\/h2>\n

Here the two packs appear alike again, and the resemblance lasts longer than many growers assume. Chemotype leaves no mark on a seedling. Leaf shape, vigour, stem length and growth rate are controlled by other genes entirely, and the three kinds of plant in the 1:1 pack come up without any visible difference from one another and from each plant in the CBD-dominant pack.<\/p>\n

One practical difference during this stage comes from lineage not chemotype. Lines with recent hemp ancestry, which covers some less developed CBD-dominant lines, tend to stretch taller and fill out less. A well-worked 20:1 strain behaves like a normal indoor hybrid; a young one may still carry the field in its shape. Neither habit says a thing about the ratio to come.<\/p>\n

When the Resin Comes In<\/h2>\n

In flower the two packs start to give clues, and most of them mislead. Trichome coverage is the first thing a grower judges, and it was a fair rule: early CBD-dominant strains showed visibly less resin than their THC counterparts, a inheritance from hemp. Modern selections have mostly closed that gap, and a less frosted plant from the CBD-dominant pack can perfectly well come in exactly where the foil promised. Trichome density and chemotype are inherited on separate genes.<\/p>\n

Smell is an even poorer guide. The terpene chemistry lives on yet different genes, so the THC-dominant plant sitting in the 1:1 pack can smell identical to the balanced one beside it, and both can be identical to a plant from the CBD-dominant pack. People who attempt to separate a balanced pack by nose at week eight are right about half the time, which is not any better than leaving the plants unsorted at all.<\/p>\n

One Place CBD Is More Forgiving<\/h2>\n

Here the two packs differ in a manner that benefits the grower of the CBD-dominant pack and the CBD-dominant plants hidden in the 1:1 pack. CBDA degrades rather slowly than THCA, so a CBD-dominant plant allowed a week past its ideal point keeps the bulk of its cannabinoid load, whereas a THC-dominant one in the same neglect has by then started shedding THC to CBN. The cloudy guidance still applies; it holds on account of the terpenes, which degrade on any plant regardless the chemotype, and a late, over-dried CBD flower tastes of little however good the test result says.<\/p>\n

Stage Six: The Jar<\/h2>\n

The CBD-dominant pack can go into one jar. Each plant in it holds about the same ratio, and blending them alters nothing worth measuring. The 1:1 pack should never be handled the same way. Pool its 10 plants in a single jar and the result is a mixture that nobody’s foil ever promised, weighted by whichever plants grew most, and nothing on a later test can pull apart what went in.<\/p>\n

The habit that prevents the trouble is almost tedious: harvest the balanced pack plant by plant, dry each separately, label them, and try each one one at a time before the crop is combined. It is the only point in the entire grow where the different kinds of plant in the 1:1 pack can still be kept apart without a lab, and then only for the reason that every one is at that moment in its own bag.<\/p>\n

Reading the Two Results<\/h2>\n

Submit a sample from every jar to a laboratory and the two packs at last are legible. For the CBD-dominant pack the reports arrive back grouped closely around the stated ratio, differing mostly in total output not in balance. For the 1:1 pack they come back in three clusters: a few plants showing almost all THC, a few with almost all CBD, and the rest somewhere around one to one. Nothing of that result is a failure; it is the bench cross written out as numbers.<\/p>\n

Over-the-counter test kits exist for growers who cannot reach a lab, and most show whether THC is present rather than how much. That is sufficient to separate the THC-dominant jars out from a balanced pack and insufficient to assign a ratio to the rest, and that matches the most frequent need: knowing what of the 10 jars is going to catch out someone.<\/p>\n

Where the Law Reads the Numbers<\/h2>\n

The last place at which the two packs diverge is in law, and it catches growers who assumed “CBD” was shorthand for “hemp”. Most jurisdictions classify hemp by a THC limit, a small fraction of a percent of dry weight, and the precise figure varying by country and over time. A plant from the CBD-dominant pack making twenty percent CBD at twenty to one at the same time makes around one percent THC, which is several times above the majority of limits. Certified hemp lines are selected to hold total cannabinoid content low so the THC fraction remains below the line at maturity; CBD seed lines are selected for rich output and let the THC scale with it. A shop that offers only a ratio is describing a flower line; anyone who needs a legal hemp crop needs to look for a tested THC percentage at harvest and order no line that does not provide one.<\/p>\n

Beyond the threshold issue, the chemotype alters very little in the law on the seed as such. Where holding cannabis seeds is permitted and germinating them is not, the 1:1 pack and the CBD-dominant pack fall under the same position as every other pack. Where the plant is legal without restriction, the decision between them is a matter of preference and nobody else’s.
