The disappointing sativa grow usually goes back to a word that was read in the wrong one of those senses: a flowering time read as a promise, a “sativa-dominant” tag read as a statement of effect, a landrace bought as if it were a tent-bred hybrid. The entries below are put together with the range at https://hazesativaseeds.com open for reference, since it leans heavily towards the classic end of the spectrum where the words matter most; the meanings though hold to any sativa seed from any shop. They are given in no particular order, since none of them is usable without the others.

Flowering time (and what it is counted from)

The number of weeks between the start of flowering and harvest, which is the single most frequently misread figure on a sativa pack. For photoperiod seed it is counted from the day the light is cut to twelve hours, not from sowing, so a “fourteen-week” sativa grown with an ordinary vegetative stage is a five-month plant. Seed companies also give the shorter end of a spread, since the longer end moves less seed.

Long-flowering lines take anywhere from ten weeks to well over twenty, and the slowest line in the Haze Sativa Seeds range is at around 16 weeks after the flip. The catalogue can be filtered by this figure, which is a reasonable first pass if you have a grower with a tight timetable. A grower who adds four weeks on top of whatever the pack states is rarely disappointed.

Foxtailing

The habit of some flowers to grow fresh calyx clusters on top of existing ones, producing spired, irregular buds instead of round ones. In the majority of indica-leaning strains it is a heat response, typically caused by light too close or a room that is too high, and the standard response is to fix the room.

In a good number of sativas, especially Southeast Asian and some Haze lines, it is genetic and is going to happen under a flawless room. A new sativa grower frequently wastes a month chasing a problem that was never there, lowering lights and temperatures only slowing a long flower even more. The breeder seldom says which type you should expect; the lineage generally does.

Hermaphroditism in long-flowering lines

The appearance of pollen-bearing flowers on a female plant, typically late in flower and often under stress. Almost every cannabis line carries some tendency for do; sativa plants express it more often, and the reason is one plain reason: sixteen weeks of flower is sixteen weeks of opportunity for a light leak, a temperature spike or a late watering that can set it off, and an plant that has already waited beyond its intended end frequently produces a few desperate male flowers on its own in a final effort to set seed.

Not one of this means a sativa strain unstable as a matter of nature; it means the room’s consistency count for longer. A sealed tents, steady conditions and cutting the moment the plant is ready rather than a week after remove the greater part of the problem. A listing that states a breeder screens parents for hermaphrodite tendency is worth more on a long-flowering line than for any other category.

Landrace versus heirloom

A population of plants shaped over centuries to one region by local growers and growers alike, and not by modern selection. Thai, Colombian, Congolese and Oaxacan stock are the sativa examples. A landrace is variable, not a single plant: within a pack the flowering times, flowering times and aromas spread far more than in a tent-bred line, and that variation is the point of growing one.

The mistake is treating a landrace as a modern product. It carries traits that make sense in an equatorial field, including height that no tent can hold and a flowering clock tuned to a equatorial daylength the majority of growers never offer. “Heirloom” on a listing usually refers to a landrace that has been reproduced somewhere over a number of generations, often with light selection for indoor life; it is nearer to usable but still far from uniform. A seller offering “landrace” without an collection region and a generation history is applying the word loosely, and the seeds should be priced with that in mind.

Terpinolene (the “sativa smell”)

A aromatic compound present in high proportion in a lot of old sativa strains and accounting for much of the thing growers mean as a “sativa” aroma: green, piney, citrus and faintly sweet all at once. It is volatile, driven off easily by fast drying, and terpinolene fades faster during the cure than the heavier terpenes which dominate indica-leaning stock.

For a seed buyer the word earns two jobs. Where a listing names terpinolene as the lead aromas, the line probably carries substantial Haze-era genetics regardless of what the percentage says. And when the grower are after that smell to survive by the jar, the drying has to be slow and cool; a fast dry flattens a terpinolene sativa to something that tastes of very little and no trace of what the pack promised.

Latitude

The single number that decides if a sativa can finish outdoors, and one no pack prints. Long-flowering lines require a autumn days to go on late enough for the plant to ripen; at high latitudes the frost comes first, and the grower cuts a unripe plant in the end of October or watches it to mould in November. The closer south, within the northern hemisphere, the longer the window stretches, and Mediterranean or low-latitude growers can finish lines that temperate growers cannot.

The usable reading for a seed pack: an “outdoor” line finishing date is stated for the breeder’s home latitude, normally somewhere in temperate Europe or the west coast of the United States, and each step further north of that pushes the date later towards the weather. A grower above about the fiftieth parallel who is after a true sativa in the garden needs to be looking for a sativa autoflower or a covered space, and not a better season.

Haze

Originally a particular line of plants put together in 1970s California from Mexican, Thai and South Indian parents, and then preserved and refined in the Netherlands. A true Haze grows tall, fills out openly, flowers for twelve to sixteen weeks and smells of spice, citrus and a note sharp that no other other line exactly reproduces.

In its second sense “Haze” is whatever cross that carries some of that family, which today is most of the sativa-leaning market. A listing which reads “Haze” and gives no lineage may be mostly percent original old family or one small fraction of it, and the flowering time tracks the fraction, not the name. The useful question is not “is it a Haze” but “how much, and through which parent”.

Equatorial (the twelve-hour problem)

Describes lines from regions in which daylength hardly changes through the year, and where the plant does not evolved a sharp reaction to changing days. Such lines frequently start flowering slowly under a conventional twelve-hour schedule, since twelve hours is, to them, an unremarkable day and not a signal.

The practical fix, handed down among sativa growers over decades, is to cut the light further: eleven hours, sometimes ten, especially in the last weeks. It costs some little yield and buys a more clearer finish. A listing which uses “equatorial” is telling you this with one word, and a grower who reads it as a note on origin misses the instruction hidden in it.

Sativa-dominant

The catalogue term rather than a measurable one. The phrase usually means that the larger share of a hybrid’s lineage are described as sativa by whoever drafted the description, which occasionally means no more than a certain the buds are longer or the aroma brighter than the same breeder’s indica-labelled lines.

The effect people connect with a word, clear-headed instead of sedating, is driven more by terpene profile and by THC balance than it is by the sativa fraction, and plenty of “sativa-dominant” hybrids deliver a heavy sleepy effect and a good number of the opposite stock deliver the opposite. To a grower the percentage is useful for a loose hint to growth habit, flowering time and stretch; as a guide to effect it is close to useless unless accompanied by the terpene notes.

Sativa seeds arrive with more jargon around them than any other category of cannabis seed, and most of it says one thing to a botanist, something else to a seed company and a third to the grower standing in front of the pack.
